Our current moment in history is unique in that many of us are not the product of one monoculture, but a living Venn diagram of many. We are connected across national boundaries and ethnicities, largely in part to the ease at which people can move around the globe since the industrial revolution and, more recently, the advent of the internet. Being a “third culture” kid is a new kind of culture - straddling two or more worlds, not entirely belonging to one or the other. Some of us have families from different backgrounds, while others of us, like myself, have moved from one country to another, shaped by both. I had the honor to sit down with one of my best friends who I consider to have explored cultural identity so beautifully. Shavier Martinez is the pastor of Tribe Orlando, a faith community we have built relationship with over the years. In our conversation, we explore complex cultural identities, and how important it is to discern how we have been shaped by race, ethnicity, and nationality, for good or not-so-good; but in the end, we bring it all to Jesus for redemption.
